Match Report:

History was made this day, when we fielded a Mixed Section team in a competitive match, against the Young Bowlers Section after the unification of our sport in Oxfordshire.

The weather was dry, although there was a cold wind at one end and a bright sun with higher temperatures at the other end. Everyone was supportive for building the youngsters consistency and confidence and there was a lovely atmosphere throughout.  The Mixed section team had a good win overall, running out with 97-70 points, although the score was secondary to aims for the day.

On the show rink, a strong Mixed team of Roger Oliver, Sue Markham, Mike Jelfs and skipped by Chris Weller, were beaten 20-19 on the last end against a very young team skipped by Zoe Pratley.

On rink 2, we had a narrow win (18-16) against a team bolstered by skip Jake Gibson, who guided the young players through this competitive rink. The rink was represented by Roger Hopkins, Caroline Bloomfield , John Hurren and skip Tracey Richens, who secured the victory on the very last bowl.  On rink 3, Margaret Morris, Richard Turner, Richard Morris and skip Chris Beard won by the largest margin 22-10, and would have taken the pens if they didn’t have to get away quickly due to other matches in the afternoon.

On rinks 4 & 5, both the mixed teams both won by 19-12 points. Well done to Ron Smith, Nick Baldwin, Helen Young and Matt Osling on rink 4 and on rink 5 - Vice President Alan Scholan, Terry Boswell, Jamie Goodwin and Mike Morris beat off the excellent bowling from their younger opponents.

The match fees were split between the Young Bowlers section and the Kidlington Presidents’ charity and we wish to thank the Kidlington members for hosting the event and providing hot drinks and rolls on arrival.

A good start for the mixed section overall and I hope this encourages more people to join the squad. We desperately need a number of additional players for a game in Leicester on 25 May so don’t be shy, but give it a try.
