Painswick were the hosts for our annual match against Gloucestershire's mixed team on Bank Holiday Monday, 25 May. The heat was slightly higher than the day before and good sun tans was the order of the day. The green was quite fast and contributed to a very enjoyable day.
Rink 1 had a line down the centre, to accommodate a Gloucs player with poor eye-sight and our own Terry Boswell had her wheelchair to get up and down the rink. Seeing the way the poor sighted bowler kept being very close to the jack, I considered poking myslf in the eye to see if it would improve my game. The game was close throughout, although the Glos team played slightly better overall, so our team of Bev Cross, Terry Boswell, Nick Baldwin and John Hurren had to settle for a 10-14 loss over the 15 ends played.
Rink 2 didn't fair better losing by 4 shots also, but our team of Julia Lambert, Terry Thomas, Ron Smith and Dave Leighfield finished strongly with 9 shots over the last 5 ends. On rink 3, our loss was only two shots, with the opponents 5 shot winning 11 th end seemed to be the difference between the teams. This rink had Richard Morris as skip, assisted by Margarett Morris, John Stephens and President Alan Scholan.
On rink 4, Mike Morris's team also lost by 2 shots in a close game. He was joined by Bob Wright who stepped in at short notice (Thanks Bob) , Cilla Clarke and Gary Smith. There score was 12-14.
Our show rink on the day was rink 5, with a condident team of Maurine Osborne, Stuart Cross, Cynthia Briant and was well skipped by Brian Clarke. They broke the run of results listed above by winning 23-8, which included a 6 on the first end and they only allowed their opponents to score on 4 ends. Well done.........
Rink 6, which was controvershall, because our scorer put the results down on the card, the wrong way around ! So what we initailly thought was a good win by 4 shots, turned out to be a loss of 4 shots instead. Our team battled hard but failed to score on the last 4 ends, which was the deciding factor.
The host club put on a delighful salad with a great dessert to round up our day. The carnage around the Glous cheese chasing event , just up the road, was all gone by the time we left the clubhouse. The overall score was 79-78 to our opponents.
Thanks to everyone for making themselves available on a bank holiday to play.
