Mixed Section v Leicester Parks at Soar Valley BC - Match Report - 5 July, 2026
Our players all had the long journey to Soar Valley, north of Leicester on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The journey did not make our team tired, on the contrary, they were keen to get started and didn't they play well? The overall score was Oxfordshire 124 - 57 Leicester parks.
Our only losing rink was on rink 1, our team of Sue Reid, John Stephens, Ron Smith and Gary Smith (not related), had a lethargic start and the match progressed tightly until their opponents got a 6 on the 10 th end. The Leicester team were bolstered by that big winning end and with 2 ends to play with a 11-20 score for Leicester. Our team finished strongly with 5 shots on the last end, but whilst reducung the difference, the final score was 16-20 in favour of the opponents.
Rink 2 had a great start, leadig 11-0 after 5 ends, but peaked too early and lost concentration letting their opponents back into the game. However, John Standen, newby Michelle Woodward, Terry Thomas and John Hurren managed to stay in front for the whole game with an overall win of 17-13. The other three rinks were all trying to win the highest rink award and it was so close between them. Val Thomas, Barry Woodward (also a newby), VP Julia Lambert & Caroline Bloomfield amassed a super win of 30 -8 . Not to be left behind, the team of Sharon Smith, Brian Meikle, Roger (on loan from Leicester) & Brian Bloomfield won by the same margin with a 28-6 win.
But our President Alan Scholan, with Nick Baldwin, Mixed Chairman Terry Boswell and skipped by Richard Morris, took their time and finished 33-10 to pip the two Bloomfield rinks and won the pens and other goodies from our President.
The game was played with a hint of fun and the host club were attentive and served a very good meal at the end. Thanks to all for making this an enjoyable afternoon.
