Match Report:  The BO Mixed Section v The BO Young Bowlers Section

Played at Kidlington Bowls Club on Sunday, 17 May, 2026

The Mixed section had it’s first match of the season on 17 May at Kidlington B C, who presented a very good green and their usual high level of hospitality to ensure an enjoyable day. This was our third match with the younger bowlers over consecutive years, and it is clear to see a massive improvement in their standard of play. My first thought after the game, was we need to put a stronger team out next year, to continue both sections’ developing standards.

We played 5 rinks and 3 of those were won by the mixed section, but the overall result was that the Young bowlers won 92-83. Congratulations to all the younger bowlers that took part, as it is clear to see more confidence and a higher skill level at the start of the season.

One match in particular, that contributed to the overall win was unfortunately the rink skipped by Mike Morris, as his opponents carved out a conclusive win by 31-12. Onlookers confirmed a very polished victory by three your girls – Harriet, Grace and Ruby, supported by Joe Justin as skip.   On rink 4, two Carterton skips represented both sides, Jamie Goodwin for the Mixed section and Jake for the Juniors. The turning point appears to be a six for the Young bowlers when the score was 9-9 and they continued to lead over the next 10 ends.

The other three rinks were all won by the mixed section players, who had to concentrate and work hard for their wins, due to the high performance of their young opponents. Richard Morris skipped against Zoe Pratley’s team and winning 9 shots over the last four ends, led to a win by one shot, it was a great performance. Richard was accompanied by Bev Cross, James England & Nick Baldwin.  Rinks 5 & 6 (where the grass grows longer allegedly) were both won by Helen Young’s team of John Standen, Terry Boswell & President Alan Scholan and this was matched by the mixed team of Margaret Morris, Trevor Wakeman, John Hurren & Brian Clarke who all had to play well to beat their very strong Junior opponents.

Overall, it was a great day and was played in the right spirit throughout. I think both sections will have a successful and enjoyable season.    J.H.
